What is Poikiloderma?

Poikiloderma is a condition characterized by a combination of atrophy, telangiectasias, and pigment changes resulting in an area of mottled skin pigmentation.  The condition is due to chronic or excess sun exposure and is most commonly located on the lateral cheeks, neck or chest. Lesions usually are asymptomatic, but occasionally, patients report mild burning, itching, and hyperesthesia.

What is the treatment for Poikiloderma?

There is no specific medical treatment for poikiloderma.  Education about avoiding sun exposure and proper use of sunscreens is paramount.  Recently, lasers have emerged in the treatment of the skin lesion.
