PYOGENIC GRANULOMA

What is a Pyogenic Granuloma?

A Pyogenic Granuloma is a relatively common benign skin lesion composed of vascular tissue.  It is a rapidly developing lesion that usually follows minor trauma to the area of growth.  The exact cause of the lesion is unknown.  It clinically presents as a solitary red papule or nodule that has a tendency to bleed and ulcerate.  It can occur on the fingers, lips, mouth, trunk, and toes.  It usually occurs in children and young adults.

What is the treatment for a Pyogenic Granulmoa?

Treatment consists of removal of the lesion either by surgical excision or curettage with electrodessication at the base.  Removing the lesions alleviates the bleeding, discomfort, cosmetic distress and helps if there is any diagnostic uncertainty.
