RHINOPHYMA

What is Rhinophyma?

Rhinophyma is the term used to describe a large, bulb-shaped, red-colored nose.  It is a clinical variant of rosacea that presents as severe sebaceous gland hyperplasia of the nose.  The hyperplasia may distort the contour of the nose.  The exact cause is unknown.  It was once thought to be caused by heavy alcohol consumption, but studies have demonstrated rhinophyma occurring equally in those who do not drink at all and those who drink excess quantities of alcohol.  The condition is much more common in men than in women.

What is the treatment of Rhinophyma?

Treatment consists of surgically re-shaping the nose or using a CO2 laser to resurface the nose.
