LIPOSONIX

About Liposonix

Liposonix, from Solta Medical, makes the claim “one treatment, one hour, one size smaller”, by using high intensity focused ultrasound (HIFU) technology to destroy fat cells located right beneath the skin on the abdomen. Heating the fat layer located 1.3 cm below the skin, Liposonix triggers the body’s natural processes to eliminate dead fat cells over the course of several weeks. Liposonix received FDA approval for circumferential reduction in late 2011.

Treatment Process

The Liposonix procedure is a non-invasive procedure that is done in the office in under an hour. Treatment generally begins with the person performing the procedure marking out the area to be treated with a marker. The Liposonix treatment head, which is a small handheld device, is then placed against the surface of the skin in the area to be treated. The treatment head then begins to deliver the high intensity ultrasound directly into the subcutaneous layer where the fat cells live. A single treatment session takes about an hour, during which the treatment head is moved around the abdomen or which ever other area is being targeted. Discomfort is generally imaginable and patients describe treatment as a warm sensation under the skin. There is no downtime associated to this procedure and patients can generally go back about their day after the treatment is performed.

Results

In a clinical study, the observed circumferential reduction achieved after one Liposonix session averaged to be about 1 inch (2.5 cm). It generally takes around 8 to 12 weeks to see the full results of a Liposonix treatment, though individual results will vary.
